Skiing

Sat Aug 19, 2006, 1:04 AM
Back from skiing after 3 good days of alpine skiing

This was a school excursion thing that was just mostly for fun :), no real big assesment, although it was a bit more on assesment when i went last year but this year, seeing im in year 12 it was just for a bit of fun i guess. Our teachers are pretty cool with pete being the main outdoor ed teacher and a keen snowboarder and outdoors person (great rockclimber :|)

i departed on tuesday at 5am with all my clothes, sleeping bag, pillow (i love my pillow), and ski gear already on. We arrived there at like 8 30am or something for the first train up through perisher and then we went up to mt. bluecow, nice place to ski in australia :)

the first day was good but everything was a bit choppy and icey due to a low level of snowfall this year, worst in 30 years. The choppyness of the snow made me feel like i was in the mougals and took its toll on me with me having a fall on zali's (double blue run) on the last run of the day, injuring my chin which EVERYONE got to make stupid comments on... such as 'do you realise you hurt your chin?'.. lol ohwell :)

the second day was good, i had a swish ski instructor which i picked up on straight away as he pronounced things with a cool accent :). The day was all round good, sunny and the runs were better than the first day due to the slopes being groomed overnight and a lot less people (dunno why?). We skied over to Mt. Perisher which took us 30 minutes. It was a good ski over to Perisher but the way back was a bit of hard work with a good 100 meters of uphill skiing. To improve my skills i went hard and decided to go up every bit of the uphill with my ski's attatched, in hope of improving my skills, which did help, i learned to skate and use my stocks at the same time which gave me a speed advantage of my skiing partner, brenton, when moving over flat terrain :D.. While at Perisher I wanted to get a go on the rails at the terrain park but time was against us and brenton wasnt to keen, maybe next time.

the third day was the best day with a very good snowfall during the day up to about 2pm. The temperature, weather and visibility was absolutely crap but the snow and skiing was great which is a sacrifise im willing to make anytime. We had the same instructor on the third day, Ido, who showed us places to ski that had almost noone there and they were a lot less windy, almost no wind and great snow. the third day was just a good day, i got to spoil myself with hot chocolates and cake and do lots of really good skiing. Brenton and I skiied around with a couple other people on the third day, Ben, Ally and Shawna. We did a few easier runs for Shawna (first timer), who fell over a bit :P, seeing the runs were really easy i decided it was a good time to practice my backwards skiing and spinning (show off, hehe). After deciding to ditch the rest of the group brenton and I decided to go up to the summit and try all of the hardest blue runs we could find, including excellerator (double blue), it was fun but unfortuantly a little too easy and didnt really test our skills. So we decided next year when we get our season passes we are going to do a lot more of the black runs. So far i've done one black run (mother in law), which was good.

Overall the trip was good, despite the lower ammount of snow and the fact that the year 11's with us sucked :(, there was 4 injuries compared to the 0 injuries last year, 3 were year 11's and 1 was a year 12 coming off a chair lift, how you hurt yourself off a chair lift i will NEVER know...

Cant wait for the ski season next year, and I might just be feeling a little inspired to do a little bit art on the ski trip, unfortuantly i didn't get to do any photography like i had planned but hey! thats because i was having too good of a time to care about it!
